The farmer and the financial analyst

Monday, May 17th, 2010

The farmer learns to read nature from nature herself. Similarly, his knowledge of economics, society, politics and current events comes from self-directed study that led him to Mises .org, Lew Rockwell .com, The Daily Reckoning .com, The Mental Militia .com, Rational Review Digest .com and an extensive library of economics, history, politics and sociology books.

Obama’s good side

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Obama may well be the best thing that has happened to this country in 100 years. Lemme explain. But first, the latest outrage from Washington DC.

You just spent $179,000,000 in foreign aid to Haiti, but are the only country involved who is hiding their flag. This is a very important fact – and you probably know by now that I’m not your regular fan-in-the-stands flag waver.

provisioning three teens

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

I work with three smart, active, ambitious and industrious young adults. I like them a lot. I see a lot of me at their age. I understand many of the influences that got them where they are. I sometimes ponder where I may have gone if someone had been able to reach me with some key bits of information. How many stupid moves could I have avoided? I wonder if anyone from the older generation could have reached me at all. That they didn’t could mean nobody tried or that I wasn’t reachable. I’ll never know.

Yesterday I took a chance and loaned these three some books out of my personal library. In their cases, I can at lest know that one person tried.

agility

The broadcast and cable mainstream media (MSM) exist at the pleasure of government; every one of them is subject to licensing. They are completely subservient and their “reporting” is nothing more than passionless stenography. They serve the same purpose Pravda served in the former Soviet Union – they let the peasants know the correct line of thinking.

taking public goods

Monday, October 5th, 2009

just curious about your stance on some things:

do you take advantage of public roadways, built with public funds (local, state and federal)?

do you use the Federal Postal system? At one time, I believe that was federally funded

I know you take advantage of the internet which, I believe, was created in part with federal funds.

do you, or have you, enrolled in Medicare.

do you, or have you, received Social Security benefits, myself, I received “survivor” benefits after my mom died when I was a kid and perhaps I might even get some in the future should the system not imploded.

did you take advantage of any public education? even private education gets some amount of local, state or federal funds, even if it is not being taxed.

The point I am trying to refer to (and no, it isn’t the one on my head), is that nowadays, “no man is an island”. If nothing else, I’ll bet you received the benefit of the defense of this country by its forces and law enforcement as well.

higher education

Friday, January 9th, 2009

I see so many relatives, friends, co-workers and their kids going off to college. I am saddened by all of the people who sacrifice so much of their time and money attending government schools. Just as a man with only a hammer views every problem as a nail, and the AMA figures knives or prescription drugs cure all ills, the U.S. university system has 2-year, 4-year, 6-year and 8-year programs for every trade.

economic wizards

Top of the news to you.
Idaho, U.S. unemployment jumps again
Economists say employment will rebound eventually, but it could take a year or more.

Well those economists are on safe ground there. It sure as heck will take more than a year, but they covered that bet safely. Still safe, but even more misleading is the Economics Department Chairman quoted later in the article.

Same answer 2 years later

Friday, August 8th, 2008

I tripped over a response I wrote exactly two years ago in my run for governor of Idaho. Interestingly, I don’t think I’d change a thing in it. The problem has become apparent to most folks who can fog a mirror, but the solution still escapes them. Here’s to hoping they will get it soon.

What are your feelings about Idaho’s economy and what should the state do to improve it? (more…)

Explaining Liberty

Friday, August 1st, 2008

There is an excellent ten-minute presentation on self-ownership here. Those of us who accept the philosophy and even necessity of liberty have a hard time understanding why this simple, straightforward, easy-to-understand and obviously right explanation of the concept doesn’t immediately change the viewer, and snowball to change the world within a few weeks or months.

The answer is simply that people cannot apply it to their world and are overwhelmed by any attempt to do so. (more…)

So Many Pieces In Play

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Our 12-year-old grandson is spending a few weeks with us. He wanted to play chess. The last game of chess I played might have been around his age when for the first time I won a game against my dad. I found myself blissfully moving pieces around opposite him when I awoke to a game nearly over. “WHOA! If you don’t start thinking real darn quick, he won”. You’d have to know him to know how bad that would make the next two weeks.

He rang my bell. I dove two-levels deeper into concentration. I started looking at all of the pieces. I fought off the immediate threats and began a hurried, but effective offense. Things worked out a lot better. Had I slept just one or two moves longer, he had the game.

This morning, several days later, I woke up with several pieces of US and world event manipulation swimming around in my head. It was bothering me to know that there is a plan and a fit to all of them, but I can’t see it. I need to organize what I do know and try to figure out what the game is. Perhaps I ‘ll survive with my liberty intact. I don’t want to know how bad failure will make the rest of my life. I’ll share the pieces with you here. (more…)
