hitting the pantry

Friday, August 7th, 2009

This month we reorganized our finances. A side effect was that we had to pay forward an amount equal to one of our four paychecks. We pummeled our budget until it worked. The primary casualty turned out to be the local grocer. He gets practically nothing from us till September. This option is only available because we have food in our pantry and our garden is putting out.

Which is more reliable, your appetite or your ability to buy groceries?

Civil unrest

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Today’s entry isn’t really here. Rational Review Digest, an excellent source for news, gave me a snippet that led to another great Claire Wolfe article. This one is “Preparing for civil unrest“.

Claire is an excellent and thoughtful writer. In this article she has considered ramifications to much of what is going on economically, socially and politically today that makes many of us uncomfortable. My service to you today is to say, “Go read it“.

frightful knowledge VS terrifying ignorance

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

I understand that none of your neighbors want to read these books. Even if they are readers, they sure as heck don’t want to own the troubling thoughts these books give. The truths of fiat currencies and unbridled power are too horrible to envision as our own and our children’s futures. But the alternative is worse.

CHANGE for a small town

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Your city bill going up again reads the small town weekly. The article chronicles the mayor and city council increasing fees to cover shortfalls in collections. In the world outside of city hall, incomes are shrinking, budgets are tightening and people are straining with some rather dramatic family fiscal problems. For the boys inside the answer is obvious: raise taxes.

The Little Red Hen

Friday, March 13th, 2009

The sad, bad news was that cost-benefit and available-income analysis determined we can’t establish a garden at our new rental property. Unable to come up with the cash to haul in compost, spread, cultivate and plant enough to recoup our investment this year, let alone getting the chicks and feed for our multi-colored egg production project. Recognizing the garden was merely break-even in the current year wouldn’t have stopped me by itself, but the harsh reality that I could afford the seeds, but not the soil was a real stopper.

job offer

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

My daughter has an opportunity to leave her $60,000 (in 2008 dollars) Boise job to repair their Seattle shop for $100,000 per year. While there are ramifications in a zillion directions, what I didn’t want her to overlook in her decision-making process is sneaking up on all of us like an angry bull rhinoceros approaching our front lawn croquet game.

The time is nigh

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

The rulers gave us a choice of four anti-gunners. Unsurprisingly, you elected an anti-gunner. They took over our currency, reduced its value by 90% in 90 years, down to 1% of the value it had when they took it over in the next 5 years in a trajectory that is aimed at the moon as we speak. The dollar is done. They have created an economy wherein the majority are dependent on government checks and well over half of those shouldering the burden will lose their jobs in the next year. Heck, they have even scheduled the first meeting to establish a world currency and new world order for November 17th.

Their cards are on the table. They are ready for it to come to a head – NOW.

It is show time.

recovering our republic

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

The question came to me today, “How do you believe that we can restore our republic in our lifetimes?” I found it worth considering. I am evolving to Lysander Spooner’s view:

The Constitution has either produced the government we have now, or was powerless to prevent it.”

However I temper that with my long-held belief that a workable number of us is unlikely to create an anarchical utopia while maybe as many as 99% are still hoping to be led by benevolent rulers. On the other hand, I do suspect a workable 10% or more could be inspired to revert to the era of relative liberty that followed the Constitutional Convention.

voluntaryism

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

I ran across a great essay called The Voluntaryist Spirit By Carl Watner.

I’d almost forgotten what it was to immerse oneself in philosophy and to challenge my intellect. I found the full essay well worth reading. Go there. Read it.

Meanwhile, I clipped some choice sentences and phrases that really hit me. They are all below. But trust me, they are a fraction of the whole. Go read the whole.

Google Maps

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

I sent this to friends as an e-mail. I left the link to our farm off. You’ll get the picture without it.

Our friends introduced us to Google Maps. I must say I am impressed with the scope and utility of this project. If you click on the link below, it will take you to our new farm. You can move the arrows around to get different views. When they took the pictures to produce this, the surrounding 40 acres was high in corn. This year it is wheat. The road, house and front yard look pretty much the same. (more…)
