corrected vision

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Sometime after 40, the human eye loses much of its ability to focus up close and far away at the same time. My rifle match scores are deteriorating because I can either see the front sight clearly without prescription lenses or the target clearly with my prescription lenses but I can no longer do both well enough to plant my bullets around the bull like I used to. Several competitors have suggested I get shooting glasses that are half-way between plain safety glasses and my distance prescription… or “half a diopter less” than that prescription.

After discussing this idea with two local eyeglass sellers, both told me it is against the law to do that … without first hiring them to re-examine my eyes and write a fresh prescription.

uncommon cold response

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

I come from such a normal mother. How did this happen to me? How did I get so far out of whack?

I catch a cold. It gets bad enough that I miss work. I frustrate Mom because I don’t go to an AMA- and state-licensed physician.

health care

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

What we are headed for instead is unaffordable, unavailable, restricted, government-controlled health care.

Implied is that this wouldn’t have happened were government building inspectors involved in the construction.

HELLO! This photo was taken in Communist China. The government is involved in EVERYTHING.

Sonia’s sinus solutions

Friday, February 27th, 2009

I have had a lifetime of experience with sinus and chest congestion. It seems to be a weak link in my genes. Thus, I am familiar with the drill my AMA providers deliver. I give the government-certified prescriber 10 hours worth of my pay and they give me one or two slips of paper. I give the prescription-filler another 10 hours of my pay and they give me a bottle or two of big-pharma chemicals that kill stuff. My body then spends weeks wrestling with chemicals, good bugs, bad bugs and whatever else I subject it to. In about a month I notice I’m feeling good again.

Ending the Mexican Civil War

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

I have written so much regarding the “war on drugs” that I was surprised this morning to find none of it here. I’ll have to remedy that someday. My first step is to share a great article I found today at Downsize DC.

All prohibitions are transfers of money and power. Granting exclusive markets to big pharma and powerful drug lords are no different. Huge profits buy politicians, police, military, judges and support great crime families. The losers are the drug users, their families and communities. For the winners, those are small prices to pay.
